Notes on doing business in Davidson
Few towns around Charlotte have planned as deliberately for people on foot. Davidson's General Plan of 1993 and the Planning Ordinance of 2001 put walking, mixed uses and connected streets first, and one visible result is that the town does not allow drive-thrus.1 The historic core, downtown included, became a National Register Historic District in 2009, the same year Davidson was named a North Carolina Main Street Community.1
The brick rows along Main Street went up between 1900 and the Depression, when the block across from the campus held general stores, a drug store, barbers and a bank. Today the same storefronts hold mostly restaurants and specialty shops.1 The street still does a lot of the selling. A table outside a café or a banner for Concerts on the Green is a kind of advertising that no website can replace.
What changed is how new people arrive. The 2020 census counted 15,106 residents, up from 10,944 in 2010 and just 4,046 in 1990.1 Most of those newcomers met the town's businesses on a phone before they ever parked on Main Street. The contractors working out of home offices, the practices near Exit 30 on Griffith Street and the consultants who never had a storefront depend on that search even more.
So the job is simple to describe and fussy to do: make sure a search for what you sell turns up your name, and that the page it lands on answers the question quickly. That is what a hand-coded website and steady local SEO are for.

Is this the Davidson near Lexington?
No. This site is for the Town of Davidson in north Mecklenburg County, on the southeast side of Lake Norman. Davidson County, whose seat is Lexington, is a different place entirely. We also have no connection to Davidson College; we just work with the businesses around it.
Where is your office?
In Mooresville, seven miles north on NC 115, the same road that becomes Davidson's Main Street. Most of a project happens by phone, email and screen share, and Roger drives down when meeting in person would help.
Do I own the website?
Yes. The domain, the words, the photos and the code all belong to your business. We host it and look after it, but you can take it elsewhere whenever you like.
Do you use WordPress or a site builder?
No. Every page is written by hand in plain HTML and CSS, so it loads quickly and there is no admin panel to break or keep patched.
